Because...

I met my ex on Match.com; he was in remodeling houses, very handy, very charismatic and very good looking. He had graduated from Penn State with a Geophysics degree and had worked for years in the oil industry. When my ex proposed he had bought a very cheap ring off eBay, and got a band from his father for free. Alter he got some side diamonds added again – from his father for free. He saved a lot of money on me for sure. I had signed a pre-nup for him and we had the cheapest wedding possible with my parents paying and me getting my dress at a consignment shop. When we got married my ex started working back in the oil industry making six figures a year – not that I knew much about our finances, we never mixed out money and I was never fully informed on his income – we split bills 50/50. After the birth of our son – I stopped working to become a stay at home mom and my ex decided to buy me an engaged ring that I chose and I liked and that was bigger than my first. We had the first set turned into earrings and a necklace. After my ex divorced me I was lucky I to get some funds from an account he had put both our names on. However I lost my house, he tricked me into signing over a car and he got laid off. Since our divorce in 2012 he has never again worked for the oil industry and now is at a hotel as a handy man making less than my $41,000/year and I have to pay him $290/month for child support as he is footing the school bills. I have tried with lawyers and the court to argue that he is purposely under employing himself out of spite just to cause me financial stress. He knows he can no longer torture me mentally being married to him but he can still stick it to my pocketbook. I know every ex will bad mouth their ex – divorce is a sad and hard thing. It was like going through a death. I was on anti-depressants; both my son and I have been in therapy. I was fortunate to use the money I got in the divorce to put a down payment on a house and buy a safe snow friendly car in full. My house is small and old and needs a LOT of wok but it’s mine and I can finally decorate and do in it as I please without feeling like a slave/prisoner. My freedom cost a lot, but it’s worth it in the long run. My ex-husband has narcissistic personality disorder I think, as well as several major anxiety issues and perhaps suffers from depression. He was mentally and verbally abusive. I could do nothing right, ever. Every time I tried to rise to the standards he set or “make him happy” he raised the bar higher and I never realized I couldn’t make him happy – because he was simply not a happy person. I honestly hope one day my ex can get help and find peace and happiness in his life. I am sorry we failed one another in our marriage – I am sorry for my role in the demise of our relationship. However the continual verbal abuse causes me to still have panic attacks when I have to interact with him, which, thankfully is very little. I have about $6,000 in credit card debt from the divorce to pay off. I don’t want to sell my beautiful ring, I have to sell it. Sorry I can’t say more the whole thing makes me so sad.

My bounce back plan is...

I have about $6,000 in credit card debt from the divorce to pay off. I don’t want to sell my beautiful ring, I have to sell it. Then save up to fix up my house for me and my son, Alec. It’s a lovely old 1955 Mid Century Mod home that needs about $70,000 to be set right. I know in a few years I should be able to get a construction loan or a HELOC and will make it our “dream home”.
