After 3.5 years of very serious dating (honestly, it was never not serious), my boyfriend blindsided me with the break=up while we were looking for a new apartment. Why were we looking for a new apartment? Because our previous place was set on fire by maintenance and was no longer habitable.
Yes, you’ve got that right. In the span of two weeks, I lost my home and the person I wanted to believe I’d be with forever. The worst part might have been that he had never treated me poorly until those final five minutes when he told me “You’re not my person.” (SERIOUSLY!?) Well, I should say he was never outright mean to me until those final five minutes. If I’m honest, he did treat me poorly in that last year — not being emotionally available or attentive, paying more attention to video games or his nerdy card game than he did to me.
He had his flaws and I saw them clearly, but despite it all I loved him. Maybe that’s what hurt the most.
I literally need to rebuild my life. I’m going to have a new rent payment that I’ll have to cover all by myself, and I’ll need to replace many of the possessions that were either lost in the fire or in the relationship. I need to get back on track, get out of my parents’ house and regain my independence.
