Wine About It: Room Decor Hacks For The Vino-Lover

Are others complaining about your collection of wine bottles? Wine bottles and corks are often kept in memory of special occasions, but memorabilia can become clutter over time. Why not turn those bottles into something that will be enjoyed for many years to come, which you eventually pass on to loved ones? (Yes, the same ones that complain about your collection.)

Here are some hacks to silence their whining, and let you enjoy your wine in peace.

1. (No Drill) Wine Bottle Table Lamp

Keep your memories next to you with this easy room decor project.

Have a wine bottle from a special anniversary? Turn your wine bottle into a table lamp by purchasing a DIY wine lamp kit. All you have to do is insert the bulb socket, which is secured on top of the cork stopper, into the empty wine bottle. Select a colorful lampshade and add the bulb. Then plug in your working wine bottle lamp for all to admire.

DIY assembly is as easy as it gets if you look for a kit. The cord runs behind the lamp, so this is a drill-free project! Most kits fit a standard 750-ml wine bottle. Depending on the bottle, the cork may need to be adjusted. Research your chosen kit to be certain it fits with your wine bottle.

2. Wine Bottle Pendant Lights

A wine bottle chandelier enlivens your living space in an artful way. Joanne Palmisano designed these Wine Bottle Pendant Lights. The DIY instructions are just seven simple steps, even for beginners.

Set aside three wine bottles. Wash the bottles inside and out, making sure that the label adhesive is completely wiped from the surface. Using a bottle cutter, you’ll safely cut off the tops of each bottle.

Then, each bottle is tapped along the scour mark and ran under alternating hot and cold water until it cleanly separates along the mark. This cut is then smoothed out. Run the cord through cut top, decorate with any flourishes and test.

These are beautiful as kitchen lighting but can be used anywhere to add an artistic and intimate touch to a room.

3. Wine Bottle Wind Chime

These wind chimes create a magical, welcoming sound. They are perfect for your front porch or garden, adding a whimsical touch. There are 13 steps to make this wine bottle wind chime.

As with the wine bottle pendant lights, you’ll use a glass cutter to score the bottle, alternating between hot and cold water to cut it along the mark. The cut needs to be smoothed out with sandpaper.

Use glass paint markers to decorate the bottle any way you like. Determine the length of the chain that you need, and string it through the bottle. A key ring makes for a suitable hanger, and an antique key is a perfect complement to dangle against the glass as the charm.

Imagine sitting on your front porch on a windy, warm spring day, sipping a glass of wine as you enjoy the sounds of the wine bottle wind chimes that you handcrafted. What a way to keep a memory and create new ones!

4. Bottle Trees

Bottle trees are a fun and unique garden decoration.
In the southern United States, blue bottles were (and still are) placed on tree limbs to catch malevolent energies and ghosts. According to superstition, these spirits become trapped in the blue bottles, which act as a protective ward. Whether you choose to believe the superstition or not, the bottles are attractive as garden decorations and make a great story to tell guests.
The bottles don’t have to be blue, and don’t need to hang from tree limbs. Decorate the haint bottles any way you like. Paint the bottles with special symbols, letters or floral designs. Slide them onto a beautiful rack that you upcycle from an antique mall or yard sale.

Imagine rays of sunlight shining through the wine bottles on your very own bottle tree.

5. Wine Cork Pocket Animals

These cute creatures are genius. You just need wine corks, small Styrofoam balls, glue, paint and other items around the house to make these adorable miniature animals come to life. Slice the corks in half, cut off a portion of the Styrofoam ball so it lays flat against the cork, and then hot glue the ball to the cork to make the head and body of the creature.

White tissue paper pasted over the “body” offers a uniform canvas to decorate the creature. The kids then help paint the animals, creating foxes, frogs and other creatures. Adults and children alike will love to play with these!
