What Would Tyra Banks Do?

Positive body image is so important for a healthy mind and attitude. Unfortunately, not many people can say they’re comfortable with how they look, and even the people you’d think would be comfortable in their skin (i.e. supermodels) are not. The thing is, body shaming falls on a spectrum, so no matter what you weigh, you’re bound to fall victim to relentless body shamers- and if you’re not a victim of them directly, “fat talk” will find it’s way to you one way or another. Over time, a combination of the media, enemies, and even friends can get inside your head and before you know it, you’re pricking and prodding at what you think are your problem areas. Getting into a bathing suit for the beach is hard enough knowing how many people may judge you there, so there is no reason for you to be your hardest critic on top of that. But the journey to accepting yourself and all your flaws isn’t easy, so it might be helpful to find inspiration in some of the biggest stars who’ve been through it all.

What would Tyra Banks do? Well, this model, actress, and television host is no stranger to body shaming- on both ends of the spectrum, too. She has spoken a few times about her time in the industry as a model, and how being thin was everything, but was still not enough for some people, who made fun of her for it. And most recently, when she put on a little weight, she was slammed by tabloids and internet trolls alike with fat-shaming comments. Now a strong proponent for destroying “fat talk”- which is not just negativity from others but from yourself- she talks about how you can’t beat yourself up over how you look, and you can never take anything too seriously. The ultimate goal, it seems, is to get rid of the “You’re so skinny, eat a burger” or “You’re so fat, hit the gym” reactions, and find a happy place within yourself, where you accept your flaws, but don’t have to ignore them. And of course, being the goal-oriented women she is, offered up some words of motivation for an interview with the Huffington Post UK: “If you don’t like your weight, there’s nothing wrong with that and we have to stop making women feel guilty about that. Instead we need to say, okay, you don’t like your thighs – so what would you like to do about that?”
