I got to meet Julia on set, on a moving party bus for Taryn Southern’s Party Fun Times. Julia is an insanely and immensely talented performer. She’s a singer-song writer with the rare ability to do both comedy and drama – she can make you laugh, she can make you cry, and whichever one it is, she’s completely mesmerizing! Whether its a cover or original lyrics, Julia’s got in going on. We got to chat to her about all things love, sex and dating. Here’s what our girl crush this week had to say.
What do you do and why do you do it?
I’m a singer/songwriter who has now found herself sort-of accidentally a viner and youtuber along the way. That seems like a lot of different things, but really, the center of all of it is music. I do it because I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. Writing music is the way I communicate and without that I’d be a blob of a human walking around without purpose. Not to be bleak or anything 🙂
What’s the best gift you ever got?
Thoughtful gifts are generally my favorite, but the sweetest gift I ever received was more practical — a new keyboard from my ex-boyfriend. I was getting ready to tour and my old one just kept falling apart in one way or another. My ex took it upon himself to get me a new one and I still tour with it to this day.
What’s the worst gift you ever got?
Granny panties…actual ones. It was meant to be a joke but something about them just irked me. I went and bought like 8 neon colored thongs the next day.
What’s your advice for all things love, sex and dating?
I continue to learn that red flags are a REAL thing. Every time I end a relationship I look back at the warning signs I saw in the beginning and wonder why the heck I didn’t trust myself. I’m not talking about little things, but the big ones that really hit you in the gut. Those always tend to resurface months or years later, eventually leading to a breakup.
For dating in general, I think it’s just to have fun. When you’re having fun, you’re yourself and you tend to attract someone who is best suited for you. Go on dates with all types of people and keep an open mind, but love yourself enough to know when to put your foot down and express what you want.
Sex – enjoy every second of it. Connect. Say what you like. And receive.
What’s your go to pick me up?
Sunshine and exercise. Honestly, when I’m down no matter what I think I need, I actually just have to get outside and move my body and within minutes I feel better. If all else fails, dairy-free chocolate and a hang with some ladies will do the trick. In addition to that, focusing on others is a great way to get out of a funk because it shifts the attention to helping another person rather than staying stuck in your own little universe of problems.
Tell us about your first heartbreak…
Ugh. I got dumped at a dance by a high school senior (when I was a sophomore) at HIS high school! It wasn’t even my school and I had to call my mom for a ride home, trying not to cry the entire ride back! I later found out it’s because I was a proud virgin and he ended up taking some other girl’s virginity that night. Of course he tried to get me back a few months later but by that time I was like…ew…gross. And thankfully I was able to save my virginity for someone who truly deserved to share that experience with me.
Tell us about a time you Bounced Back better than ever
I went through a pretty rough breakup that kept me in bed for a good month or so. He had moved across the country for me but when he got here things kind of fell apart, and I was devastated. One day I just woke up and realized my life was sort of slipping away, and I decided to put all of that energy into my art — my music. That’s when I had two back to back viral videos, was signed to multiple brand campaigns and hit an all-time high on the Spotify plays for me. I realized then and there that while breakups are hard, if channeled correctly, they can be the best thing that ever happens to you.
