A couple of weeks ago, I got to sit down to lunch with the wonderful, inspiring and all-round boss-babe Jenn Wong. She’s one of the founders of the insanely brilliant Move Lifestyle. An online magazine with style, grace and substance – it’s meant for women on the go and for that reason it’s real, relatable, yet somehow feels a little bit magical. As if this wasn’t enough, Jenn’s also a voice over artist, cocktail aficionado and social media mogul. Here’s what she had to say about all things love, sex and dating. Now, if only we could all get an Eames chair as a gift!!
What do you do and why do you do it?
I wear many hats. I’m a voiceover actress and a cocktail writer and social media producer. I think I do it because I need many creative outlets make me happy.
What’s the best gift you ever got?
I have an Eames rocking chair that my boyfriend surprised me with for Christmas one year. To anyone else, it was just a chair but the choice of this gift was the culmination of so many little moments that he remembered: a favorite song, many trips to museums and window shopping that it instantly brought me to tears. Every time I look at it I think of that moment and how well he knows me.
What’s the worst gift you ever got?
My godmother gave me a pair of socks when I was about six that had a bear with balloons on the side of each sock. I was so excited to put them on, but my six year old brain did not know that there was a “right way” and a “wrong way” to wear socks. So I put them on with the bears facing in, instead of out to the world, which lead my godmother to scold me in front of all my friends. Scarred me for life. Now I don’t like “right” and “wrong” ways.
What’s you advice for all things love, sex and dating?
Honesty. Communication. Respect. There’s a difference between expectation and hopes & desires. Sometimes in relationships, we mix those things up.
What’s your go to pick me up?
I like to read poetry. Often French Poetry. Jaques Prevert’s Paroles is one of my favorites.
Tell us about your first heartbreak…
He was an older boy who told me, “you make me feel like Disneyland” and then he left to do missionary work in Russia. We kept in touch and had a brief romance when he returned, but I was more enamored with him than he was with me, and one day his roommate told me he left with no forwarding number and I never heard from him again. Broke my heart.
Tell us about a time you Bounced Back better than ever
I think every heartbreak feels like it’s going to be the one that destroys you. You can’t imagine life without this person and your entire sense of being seems inextricably intertwined with someone who you can no longer call at a moments notice, or plan a future with, or lie in bed with daydreaming. But even when that emptiness inside you threatens to devour you and fill you with anger and pain, I’ve never been destroyed. I’ve always found someone who gives me butterflies again and makes me look forward to the next moment I can spend with him. It may seem like it will never happen, and it may take some time, but you will bounce back and it will feel like sunshine on your face after the winter has thawed.
