Spike Jonze’s 2013 drama “Her” about the man who falls in love with an operating system has won several awards (including Oscars and Golden Globes) for its screenplay, direction, and performances. In short: it’s a cinematic masterpiece (and Joaquin Phoenix plays the lead, which doesn’t hurt). But the whole premise got us thinking, if we could talk to Samantha (the IOS voiced by bombshell Scarlett Johansson), what advice would she give us about dating? Certainly, her relationship with Theodore had its up and downs. Here are a few things we think she’d tell us about snagging a man and keeping him.
1. Be honest about who you really are.
2. But date someone who doesn’t sell you short.
3. It’s okay to be blunt, as long as it’s something he can laugh about, too.
4. Be as aware of his feelings as you are your own. Just don’t make it weird.
5. Accept all his quirks, you’re probably a little strange yourself.
6. Be prepared to share your whole life with someone. Relationships don’t work if you’re not completely honest and open.
If you’ve seen the movie, then (spoiler alert) you know that it doesn’t actually work out for them in the end, and so maybe Samantha isn’t the best authority on the subject. But she’s a robot and probably knows more than us, so we won’t argue with that.
