Bubbly with Comedian, Writer & Host Gabi Conti

Gabi and I met for coffee-turned- bubbly in Culver City a few months ago. I was instantly wrapped up by her energy, smarts, sass and funnies. Gabi has more irons in the fire than you can imagine. She’s hosting, performing comedy, penning comedy and still finding time to write for some of the biggest publications around town. She’s got it going on! Gabi adds a healthy dose of irreverence and spirit to everything she does. When you see her in action, you’re reminded to chill out a bit…and let’s face it, we could all use a lot more of that. If you’re in LA, check out her awesome hosting skills and whipper sass at the comedy shows Free Therapy or These Are My Confessions.
What do you do and why do you do it?
I’m a writer, comedian and host (have to be more than one thing to live in LA apparently). I write mostly about dating, I call myself a sex columnist, my mom calls me a disappointment. I do it because I like to make people laugh. I like to remind people not to take life so seriously.
What’s the best gift you ever got?
An incredibly thoughtful necklace from my now ex. It was very much my style and had my initial and an elephant on it, which I know sounds cheesy, but it showed he listened when I told him a story about how as a kid I’d call them ep-i-tents. On second thought, maybe he wanted me to be a republican. Unclear.
What’s the worst gift you ever got?
An unwrapped selection of boy shorts from the sale section of Urban Outfitters, followed by him telling me how much money he spent on me. It was Christmas. I made him a custom wallet.
What’s your advice for all things love, sex and dating?
Love hard, have fun, the second it stops being fun, get out. Don’t be afraid to say what you want. Don’t play games.
What’s your go to pick me up?
Cocaine.
KIDDING.
Espresso or a nice chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc, an earful of Sinatra and being surrounded by good friends. Also cooking. Cooking makes me really happy.
Tell us about your first heartbreak…
Would have to be my high school sweetheart. He loved me and understood me like no one else. He was my best friend and probably the healthiest and best relationship I’ve ever had. He went to college and we ended things. I was so sad that I turned into this crazy, dramatic person (I’m fine now). We don’t talk anymore, he’s had steady girlfriends ever since. I wish he was still in my life.
Tell us about a time you Bounced Back better than ever
After I found out that my boyfriend of almost a year has been lying to me about his age, I used my sadness and anger as fuel, and refocused on why I moved out to LA for. It wasn’t to be a girlfriend. I threw myself into my work and comedy and in a year I wrote a book, a pilot, started a comedy show and became a contributing writer for Hello Giggles. So thank you!?
