8 Things “The Notebook” Taught Us About Relationships

Ah, the ever-hyped “The Notebook”. While it’s undeniable that the 2004 period drama is a tad bit cheesy (and maybe even a little cliché), at the root of it is an epic but realistic romance with a variety of lessons to be learned. The film centers around star-crossed lovers Noah and Allie (portrayed by dreamy Ryan Gosling and super-babe Rachel McAdams, respectively) and how they deal with their whirlwind romance and its fallout. If you haven’t seen the movie, consider seeing it at least once (even if you hate romances, just do it to get those pestering die-hard fans off your case about it), as it’s got a great overall message about true love and devotion. Read on for some of the other messages about relationships the film touts, and if you do plan on watching the movie- grab a box of tissues. Seriously.

If your relationships have failed before, chances are, you feel as if there’s nobody out there fit for you. But trust me, there is. And they’re waiting to be there for you in any way they can.

3. When you’re experiencing true love, you’ll know it

So if you’re doubting that somebody is right for you, your brain is probably telling you the truth. Listen to it!

4. Arguments aren’t always a sign of a failing relationship

There might be a better way to communicate, but at least you’re communicating. As long as nothing abusive is said, you made some kind of progress.

5. The “perfect” relationship does not exist

So don’t expect yours to be. But that does not mean that it won’t be worthwhile.

6. Age doesn’t matter

Love can be love, no matter how young you are. All that you need to make it work is a certain level of maturity.

7. Love means sharing
