Disney princesses were not always associated with feminism, unfortunately, but this is understandable. Snow White, the first ever Disney princess, made her debut way back in 1937, when first wave feminism was just barely gaining traction, so it makes sense that these early princess movies would reflect the ideals and social norms of the time (which is the whole damsel in distress, marry a rich prince to improve your life scheme). So, it is with great relief that I can say Disney princesses have come a long way from their “always be kind” days; we sometimes even have the pleasure of seeing a princess act like a total boss-ass bitch (though Disney might not agree with our wording). And while we sure are glad princesses are finally standing up and speaking their minds, it doesn’t mean we love the original princesses any less, they were merely victims of the circumstances of their time.
