We are the business

Whether you’re celebrating a friendiversary or dealing with a breakup, it’s always a good time to schedule a get-together with your friends.

Besides, celebrations and even breakups can make you want to try new things and stay social, so why not kick off your time together with some unconventional cocktails?

1. Twelve Mile Limit

During the Prohibition era, the constitution prohibited the sale of alcohol within three miles of U.S. shores. Lawmakers soon realized that this limit wasn’t enough, so they extended it to 12 miles. Meanwhile, boat-fulls of people continued to brave the open seas to throw wild parties, and enjoy their namesake drink, the 12-mile limit.

Today, you don’t have to sail the ocean blue to find this unconventional cocktail. Whip a few up in your own home and raise a toast to your wild ancestors. Combine the rum, whiskey, brandy, grenadine and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker and shake thoroughly. Then, strain into a coupe, garnish with a lemon twist and prepare to get tipsy.

2. Red, White and Blue Summer Breeze

This rum cocktail is both flavorful and colorful, a red, white and blue favorite that’s perfect for warmer weather. Just add one cup of water to one cup of sugar, chill the mixture and reserve it for later. Then, you’ll want to halve limes and strawberries and throw them on the grill for a moment.

After that, muddle strawberries and rum, then pour in half the simple syrup. Mix blue curacao with lime juice and half the simple syrup, then fill a glass with shaved ice. Pour the chilled mix on each side simultaneously and you have a patriotic summer breeze!

3. Ruby Queen

Have you ever wondered what beet juice and scotch would taste like? Alright, probably not, but this unlikely combination makes for the most delicious cocktail. As is the case with all unconventional beverages, don’t knock it until you try it.

The ruby queen is savory evidence of whiskey’s versatility and is incredibly simple to make. Simply shake your scotch, beet juice, honey syrup and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker with some ice. Then, fine-strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a fresh sprig of dill or tarragon and a lemon twist.

4. Cake Batter Martini

Whether you’re celebrating an engagement, pregnancy or nothing at all, the cake batter martini is sure to turn your get-together into a party. Don’t let the sprinkles and whipped cream fool you. This drink packs quite a punch, so grab your girlfriends and get ready to have some fun.

Gather your ingredients and dip the top of your martini glasses in water and sprinkles to create a festive rim. Then, add a teaspoon of sprinkles to the bottom of each glass. In a shaker, combine your liquor and creamy add-ins. Shake and pour the bright white concoction into your glasses. Garnish with heaps of whipped cream and even more sprinkles to get the full funfetti cake effect.

5. Purple People Eater

The purple people eater monster might only come out at Halloween, but this cocktail is delicious all year long. The deep purple hue of this drink and bright purple sanding sugar are sure to be a huge hit among your friends. Plus, the cocktail’s fruit flavor and sweet finish make it perfect for summer sippin’.

Wet the rim of each glass and dip them into your purple sugar. Then, mix your favorite vodka, blue curacao, grenadine, cranberry juice and sweet and sour mix in a cocktail shaker with ice. You can also substitute cranberry juice with cran-grape or grape juice for a darker purple color. Shake until combined, pour the mixture into each glass and serve.

6. Royal Blue Cocktail

If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, this cocktail is a close second. The deep blue hue of this delicious drink is reminiscent of The Titanic’s Heart of the Ocean sapphire necklace and is sure to make you and your friends feel like royalty.

To make the royal blue cocktail, you’ll need vodka, blue curacao, lime juice, cranberry juice and granulated sugar. Simply combine all the ingredients — except the sugar — in a shaker, shake well and strain into a sugar-rimmed martini glass.

Cheers to Creativity

Are you and the girls hoping to spend a few hours catching up? Make a handful of different cocktails and put your own creative spin on them.

Use a favorite liquor, substitute mix-ins and use your imagination to whip up a variety of unconventional concoctions. Most importantly, have fun!
