Uber-cool surfer, shark attack survivor, and feminist Bethany Hamilton once said, “Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, guts. That’s what little girls are made of; the heck with sugar and spice”, and we couldn’t agree more! And what’s more, is that all the wonderful little girls around the world grow up to be strong, powerful women, and there is something admirable in each and every woman created- whether it be compassion, intelligence, or willpower. Although International Women’s Day was last month, it is always a good idea to reflect on what you love about the women you love, or what you love about yourself! Because although being a girl is often challenging, there are so many things girls do (with each other or for themselves) that no bromance can top!
1. Sharing clothes
This is definitely not something reserved just for sisters; if you’re in a bind and need to borrow a dress or are just dying to wear a friend’s new top, chances are, a friend will come through. Swapping clothes is something usually unique to ladies (though there may be some cases where men may loan some pieces), so it’s really such a sweet display of trust and fellowship that only serves to strengthen the bond between gals.
2. Secret swapping
Although there is this image around women for being backstabbers and prone to gossiping and spilling secrets, most women are natural born listeners and honorable secret-keepers. As always, there are exceptions to the rule, but if you’re burning to share a secret, you can trust a girlfriend to hear you out and then keep her word.
3. Work ethic
Besides the fact that women already have to work harder than men for most job positions, women are motivated, diligent workers that pour their heart and soul into whatever they’re doing. Oprah, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ellen Degeneres, and Sofia Amoruso are some outstanding self-starters, to name a few.
4. Solidarity
Sure, girls will always have solidarity with their friends and their family, but not having a personal connection or relationship with someone has never stopped a woman from opening her arms and opening her heart up to somebody in need. Whether its for a quick opinion on something, a feminine hygiene product, or in more serious cases, a c*ckblock at a creepy bar, you can typically rely on another woman to give you a helping hand. Distance doesn’t stop a woman from standing in solidarity with another, either. There are tons of women who donate time and money to help out other women in less-privileged societies, who deserve the chance to show how beautiful and strong they truly are. Whatever the case, you can always depend on a woman to brighten your day!
