The Question: A senior executive at my office keeps hitting on me indirectly and asking me slightly inappropriate questions at work and on social media sites. He hasn’t done anything serious enough to approach HR about yet, but his attention and comments make me uncomfortable. I try to ignore it and either don’t respond or make light of the situation, but he continues to act this way. How do I make him stop?
Angelique’s Answer: I would say to document EVERYTHING! Print it out and start keeping a file. Even though you feel it is not a case for HR it very well might be. Especially because YOU are feeling uncomfortable! You should never have to feel that way at work, no matter what! Next time it happens I would confront him and let him know that you don’t appreciate his comments and that they are inappropriate. I know that is a difficult conversation to have, but being upfront is better. IF you don’t feel as though you can do that, which I completely understand then go to HR, with all the documents. I know that it is a very sticky situation, but once again YOU should never feel uncomfortable at work and if he doesn’t listen to you then you are going to have to take it a step further! Good luck and don’t doubt your feelings.
